Office mini PCs for small businesses: Core i5 vs N95, Windows 11 Pro and warranty
A mini PC can run a shop back office, a cashier counter or a signage screen for a fraction of the cost of a branded desktop. The choice that matters most is the processor, then the Windows licence, then who fixes it when it fails. Here is how to decide.

Core i5 or N95: which one do you need?
Both are low-power chips. The Intel N95 is an entry chip with four efficiency cores and four threads. A U-series Core i5 such as the i5-1315U has six cores and eight threads, and faster single-core speed. In daily use the difference shows when you open many browser tabs, run accounting software, hold video calls or drive two monitors.
| Use | N95 | Core i5 (U-series) |
|---|---|---|
| Cash till, queue display, kiosk, signage player | Good | Not needed |
| Web, email, documents, one or two light apps | Fine with 8 GB | Comfortable |
| Accounting plus many tabs, video calls | Slow when busy | Better |
| Dual 4K displays, light photo work | Not recommended | Possible |
| Several users on remote desktop | No | Light use only |
Memory and storage
- 8 GB is the floor for Windows 11 with a browser and an office suite. For a back office with accounting software, 16 GB is safer, especially as RAM prices have risen across 2026.
- 256 GB is small once updates and software are installed; 512 GB is a better working size.
- SATA SSDs are slower than NVMe but fine for office work. Ask which is fitted.
- Check if memory and storage are upgradable. Some low-cost boxes solder the memory.
Windows 11 Pro: why and what to ask
Windows 11 Pro adds features small businesses use: BitLocker disk encryption, joining a company domain or Entra ID, group policy and acting as a Remote Desktop host. Windows 11 Home does not offer all of these. Windows 10 is out of support, so a new office PC should ship with Windows 11.
- Ask whether the licence is an OEM licence tied to that machine and whether the key is embedded in the firmware.
- Ask for it in writing on the invoice: edition (Pro), version and activation method.
- Run Windows Update and activate it on the first day, while the seller is still reachable.
- Keep the invoice. It is your proof of purchase for the licence and the warranty.

Factory-direct mini PCs usually cost less than branded business tiny PCs, but they are not always cheaper than consumer brands once shipping and tax are added. What you pay for is a proper invoice, Windows 11 Pro, a warranty and, in larger orders, your own logo. Approved SlayDots prices appear on product pages; where there is only a quote button, no approved price exists yet.
Warranty, Wi-Fi approvals and tax
- Warranty: 12 months is typical for factory-direct units. Ask where repairs happen. If the repair centre is overseas, plan a spare for every 20 or so machines so a till is never down for weeks.
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth: in Malaysia these are communications equipment needing SIRIM and MCMC approval, and MCMC seized RM2 million of uncertified equipment in June 2026 (The Star). Ask any seller for the approval path, and consider using wired Ethernet.
- Tax: Malaysian import duty on computers is often 0%, but the sales tax rate for these HS lines is not confirmed. A small Malaysian business usually cannot claim sales tax back.
- Your own logo: some factories offer a custom logo and box from around 50 units. The brand owner then takes on the maker's responsibilities for labelling and approvals, so check the rules first.
Frequently asked questions
- Is an Intel N95 mini PC enough for an office?
- For a cash till, queue display, kiosk or light web and email use, yes with 8 GB of memory. For accounting software with many tabs and video calls, a Core i5 is more comfortable.
- Do I need Windows 11 Pro?
- If you want disk encryption with BitLocker, domain or Entra ID join, group policy or Remote Desktop hosting, yes. Home does not offer all of these.
- Is 256 GB storage enough?
- It works for a till or a kiosk. For a back-office PC, 512 GB leaves more room after updates and software.
- Do I need SIRIM approval for the built-in Wi-Fi in Malaysia?
- Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules are communications equipment and need SIRIM and MCMC approval. Ask the seller for the certificate or use wired Ethernet.
- What if the mini PC fails under warranty?
- Ask before you buy where repairs happen and who pays shipping. For factory-direct units, repairs can be overseas, so keep a spare.
